Welcome to our 9th annual Day of the Dead 5k happening Saturday, October 26th 2019. The Day of the Dead 5k was originally created to honor my sister Margarita's memory after she passed away on Oct 2nd 2003. During this holiday the ritual of setting up an altar has offered me a safe and colorful space to remember her. This altar is open to all, and over the years we have seen it grow as people bring pictures, letters, flowers, food and other trinkets as offering to their loved ones too. This year we will be adding a new offering to our beloved Hernando, brother, husband, father, friend. We encourage everyone that is participating in this event to contribute to the altar, I can assure you that it will offer you some peace and healing.
We have once again partnered with the Brentwood Boys & Girls Clubs in an effort to give back to the Latin American community by offering the kids an opportunity to do something fun and healthy-something Margarita believed in deeply.
This year we have a goal to sponsor more than a 100 kids from the Club to run the race through our “Sponsor a little runner” program where $30 dollars can contribute to pay a member’s entry fee. During the last eight years we have had over 4,500 runners and have been able to contribute over $112K to the Boys & Girls Club.
This year the race will start at 10:00am, and as usual the race course goes through Oakwood cementery and loop back to Wilmington St. We will have two altars; one at Oakwood cemetery and one on Wilmington Street where people will be able to do offerings of flowers and written messages in memory of their loved ones. There will be an art corner for the kids sponsored by Artspace, face painting by Paint Savvy, the best prices from local businesses, for top runners and best costumes, our very popular dance-off costume with the help with our awesome DJ.
As if this wasn't enough, this year we will have a commerative drink for all 21 and over runners.
So, REGISTER NOW, share with your friends, dress up and join us for an amazing fun time.
