Open to kids from ages 6-18, the Swim for Smiles Youth Triathlon is a USA-Triathlon sanctioned event and includes two courses for ALL levels of participants.

Beginners can select a Short Course triathlon that includes a 100-meter swim, a 2.5-mile bike course and finishes with a short 1K (0.6miles) run. Long Course participants will begin with a 250-meter swim, transition to a 5-mile bike course and then finish with a 3K run.

The Swim for Smiles Youth Triathlon will start on May 16 at Chapel Hill Country Club’s heated pool, move to a neighborhood bike ride and end with a golf-course run. This is considered an easy triathlon and it designed for all levels of youth participants.

Race Description

Two Courses: Long- 300m swim, 5mile bike, 3k run Short - 100m swim, 1.5mile bike, 1k run

We have two courses: *Short Course: Mostly aimed at kids 14 & Under, the short course allows kids to participate in distances that anyone can accomplish. It starts with a 100-meter swim, then moves to a 2.5-mile bike (with all right turns) and finishes with an out-and-back 1k (0.6 mile) run. *Long Course: Aimed at kids of all ages (although, those 8 & under should not attempt the long course on their first triathlon try), the long course is more challenging than the short course, but still fun and quick. It starts with a 300-meter swim, then moves to a 5-mile bike (with all right turns) and finishes with an out-and-back 3k (1.8 mile) run.

This is a USA-T (USA-Triathlon) sanctioned event that allows kids from ages 6-18 to participate in a fun, simple, youth-focused event that will get your kids interested in the sport of triathlons. We have both a short course and a long course so that all ages and abilities can participate.

Affiliated Charities

The Swim for Smiles Foundation began in 2005 when founder Gary Kayye had a vision to create an exciting, worthwhile charity event that would inspire young swimmers to use their talents to help others. It started as only a single dual swim meet between the CCR Sharks swim team (of Chapel Hil, NC) and the Hope Valley Farms' Flying Fish swim team (of Durham, NC) to raise money for the North Carolina Children's Hospital. In only it's second year, the Swim for Smiles Foundation added a second fundraising event called the Swim for Smiles Wacky Relay Day. Wacky Relay Day is where swim teams from the entire Chapel Hill, NC area meet at UNC on a Sunday morning to compete in the wackiest relays you've ever seen (i.e. the grease baloon relay, the duck relay, the pyramid relay and many more).

In it's third year of existence, the Swim for Smiles Foundation added a third event; the Swim for Smiles Youth Triathlon - a kid's only triathlon for ages 7-17 from all over North Carolina. A first of it's kind, the Swim for Smiles Youth Triathlon is USA-T (USA Triathlon) certified, focuses on youth fitness and fun and not only awards medals to all 1st, 2nd and 3rd place finishers, but to all who finish the race - a personal accomplishment!

Kayye's dream is to eventually take Swim for Smiles national and to encourage other swim teams around the USA and Canada to start their seasons with friendly competition the Swim for Smiles way and raise money for heir local Children's Hospitals. With more than 2,500 summer swim leagues in the U.S., each has an average of 10 teams, with most team rosters listing more than 75 swimmers. Summer swim leagues are known for great fun and competition. The Triangle area is no different. In Chapel Hill and Durham alone, there are more than 25 summer swim league teams and a half-dozen year-round teams.

Money in all Swim for Smiles events is raised through a number of special swimming events and relays each summer, including Parent/Child relays at the dual meets, a Wacky Relay Day, triathlon entry fees, sponsorships and, of course, private donations from individuals that support our cause. In addition, teams that participate in any Swim for Smiles events are encouraged (and are offered from the Swim for Smiles Foundation) to sell Swim for Smiles logo'd event t-shirts, water bottles, and mesh pool bags/backpacks. All proceeds benefit the Children's Hospitals.

The Swim for Smiles Foundation 501(c)(3) has an effective date of exemption of June 23, 2006. We are already a recognized non-profit whose proceeds benefit the N.C. Children's Hospital, and thus, all donations should be tax deductible (consult your tax attorney). Our Fed. tax ID number is 20-5186388. Click here for the tax form for your records.
